ER Mario Is the Playable Mario-in-Elden-Ring Mod That Survived

A viral Mario-in-Elden-Ring clip vanished after a copyright claim, but deltarooo's MIT-licensed ER Mario repository stays online by shipping zero Nintendo assets.

After a viral October clip of Super Mario 64's Mario sprinting through Limgrave hit 2.9 million views and vanished behind a copyright notice, many assumed the mashup was dead. On GitHub, deltarooo's open-source ER Mario (deltarooo/er-mario) remains live, playable on PC, and MIT-licensed. This overview relies on the repository README and release notes rather than a local playtest.

The reason the repository remains public comes down to what is inside the zip: C and Rust glue code, a physics bridge, and zero Nintendo art or audio. Like SkyCraft and Leon in the Lands Between, ER Mario requires you to bring your own game files.

Drop your own US Super Mario 64 ROM into the mod folder and ER Mario unpacks Mario's mesh, voice, and 8-wedge health meter on first boot.

How libsm64 fights inside the Lands Between

Instead of skinning an Elden Ring Tarnished in red overalls, ER Mario embeds libsm64, a portable library derived from the Super Mario 64 decompilation project. While Elden Ring runs offline via the me3 mod loader, ER Mario streams nearby Havok collision surfaces into libsm64 every frame so Mario obeys his authentic 1996 N64 movement code.

According to the repository documentation, the mashup brings over a full suite of N64 mechanics:

  • Signature acrobatics: Triple jumps, long jumps, wall kicks, backflips, dives, and ground pounds mapped onto Elden Ring's world geometry.
  • N64 combat verbs: Punches, kicks, jump-kicks, and a Bowser-style tail grab that lets Mario spin and throw staggered enemies.
  • Authentic HUD and audio: The classic eight-wedge Super Mario 64 Power Meter, coin counter, and original sound effects unpacked directly from your .z64 ROM.

The MIT template powering new Elden Ring crossovers

Because deltarooo published ER Mario under the MIT license, the repository quickly became the structural template for other character transplants into FromSoftware's engine. SupMyNinja07's Leon in the Lands Between (covered in our BYO roundup) credits ER Mario for its pose-importer layout and pre-draw hook architecture. It swaps the N64 ROM unpacker for a loader that reads Resident Evil 4 (2005) files from a local Steam install.

How to install ER Mario

Never load any mod into Elden Ring's online servers. The me3 loader runs the game offline with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled.
