Open on XModder chortdev shipped the first public beta of his Dead Space 2 VR mod on Friday, Oct 23, 2026 as DS2PCVR v0.1.1 on GitHub. The drop adds motion-controlled weapons, manual reloads and a floating holographic RIG inventory to Visceral's 2011 horror shooter, which was never built for VR.
It is the next big flat-to-VR conversion after Far Cry VVR earlier that week. For how these mods hook into old engines, see our flat-to-VR guide.
I haven't played it. This is based on chortdev's GitHub releases and README, his YouTube videos, Patreon and Boosty posts, PCVRGamer's posts on X, and UnflatVR's listing.
Months ahead of his own schedule
On June 21, chortdev posted a roadmap on Patreon for the whole original trilogy. It put the first game's beta in "early 2027" and Dead Space 2 and 3 another "6–9 months in total (mid-2027)". He wrote that "long hours of decompilation and experimentation have paid off."
The plan changed over the summer. On Aug 31 he wrote: "I started from the beginning about two times. I came from the DS3 side for the last time." That post listed stereo rendering without glitches, a tracked weapon in the right hand and telekinesis on the left.
His Oct 11 Patreon note explains why updates skip Patreon and what it costs:
"I don't want to put unfinished work behind a paywall"
In the same note he says he has worked on the mod "since May 22 (my birthday)". He names his bar as recent VR mods for F.E.A.R., Max Payne 2 and Titanfall 2, which "inspired me to aim for the same standard."
By Oct 16 the target was set. That day's Boosty post was titled "Бета релиз в следующую пятницу" ("Beta release next Friday").

What the videos show
chortdev's clips since Oct 1 built up the feature set piece by piece:
- Oct 1: full motion-control testing
- Oct 4: save station, inventory and the store
- Oct 8: "punching the necrokids"
- Oct 13: nearly 10 minutes of Chapter 5 in the Unitologist church
- Oct 20: manual reload and the pulse rifle
- Oct 23: a 34-minute gameplay session at 6:13 AM ET, then a release trailer when v0.1.1 went live that afternoon
PCVRGamer has boosted the project on X since early October. On Oct 9 the account posted "Dead Space 2 VR mod is looking like it's going to be an all time great!" That post had 641 likes by Oct 23.

Viewers under that video were enthusiastic but specific. One praised showing "only parts of the hands" instead of a full body. Another, @DualDGamer, wrote: "It looks like any dynamic lighting is currently disabled." @DeadSpy2 asked for slower walking because Isaac moves "a little too fast."
chortdev replied that he had switched off his custom visual settings while chasing a texture bug and forgot to turn them back on, and said walking is "already slowed."
